Why YOU Should Get Involved
Education is the foundation to success, because the more knowledge an individual gains, the more opportunities for growth and career advancement will be open to them. Consequently, the root cause of poverty is a lack of education, and the current statistics regarding that connection are stunningly alarming. As a community, we must come together to bring learning opportunities to underprivileged individuals, and bring awareness to this link between poverty and a lack of education. Further, if a lack of education is the main cause of poverty, then an abundance of it is the most powerful weapon against it.
-According to UNESCO, around 171 million people would escape poverty, if students in low income countries just had basic reading skills. .
-The global poverty rate would be half as much as it is today if all adults finished high school.
-For one low-income community, there was only one book to share between 300 children.
-Those with a literacy level of 4 or 5 have a 70% higher household income than those who have a literacy level of 1 or less, and a 33% higher household income than those with level 2 literacy.
-When they start school, children who are living in poverty are 4.5 times behind the rest of their peers in the development of their vocabulary.
-75% of children in poverty are not partaking in organized sports, whereas only 25% of other children are not.
